Is Your Life Ready For Groundhog Day?
Sunday, December 21, 2008

In the hit comedy film Groundhog Day, Bill Murray character, Phil Conners, is caught in another era, doomed to live the same day and over until he gets it right. Hilarious that the ensuing chaos in May on the big screen, it is a poignant and not too thinly veiled metaphor for how most of us live our own lives - mindlessly occupied with our own questions and concerns, stumbling blocks in life (often on the toes of others) with little or no conscious direction or critical thinking. Ultimately, we march on them in the same scenarios and problems over and over - not because we are caught in a loop of time, but because we are caught in a loop of life. We have not made quality, we can not graduate beyond our current situation.

One solution to this is to create what I call a "Groundhog Day" proof of life. Think about it one second. What if today (or any day recently) was the only day you had to live. Is this good with you, or should be howling tragedy? There are 5 steps to creating a GD proof of life, and I've indicated below.

1. Quit playing "Someday My Prince Will Come" on your internal radio station.

Whether the second perfect, the ideal job or the perfect life, too many of us spend so much time in the imaginary future that we let down our pieces around our feet. Why bother cleaning when you do not really belong where you now? How can you have a good night when your ideal date has not shown the door? Who cares if you blow your job - it's not like you or anything. Stop! As John Lennon sang, life is what happens when you make other plans. Do not miss the life that you fantasize about a life that does not exist.

2. Get your house in order.

Now that you're back in this, your act together and do what you have to work as well as it can for you. Design supportive environments and to raise the ditching anything that does not work and only when replacing you find something you love.

3. Pursue your dreams, not your "purpose".

Yes, we all have a purpose in life (more than one, probably). But part of the game is that we do not know what that purpose is, and all expenditures of our time trying to find it often ends up taking the place of actually living our lives in a way that we would to serve that purpose if we did. We all know people who went off to "find themselves" and never came back - not to be one of them. The best way to find yourself, and your goal is to live a life of passion and authenticity and let them find you.

4. Quality, not quantity.

Why live life to half-mast? You do not get bonus points for the selection of lots cheap, nasty fast food instead of a moderate amount of gourmet cuisine, and neither he win something you fill your closet to bursting with ill-fitting clothes and poorly match instead of holding on to an assortment of delicious ensembles. The greed and envy are not what I advocate, but life in the short to sit on the furniture and lumpy eat the bad food.

5. Do it - all day, every day.

Live life as if you may have to account for this one day. Is it really so important to get that promotion you're willing to injure a friend, the rules (even if it makes problems for everyone in the line), or claim credit for things you do not do it? Would it really take the time to make a hot meal at a stop down the road - even if you miss the opening sequence of your favorite TV show? Do you really need one more jewel that you'll never wear, when the money could go much further to the community center downtown that provides valuable resources for those who need it? As they say, what is happening around the future. What you have to come?

Imagine the case today and over and over again for the rest of your life (or at least until you got that right). What you need to empty, clean and place in your life to an astonishing perspective, rather than a thought of cooling? Do not wait until tomorrow to start. In real life, we do not get a chance to get it right.
